ザ・マッカラン（THE MACALLAN）の歴史をおさらい
マッカランの歴史
スコットランドの北部地域にある「スペイサイド」という場所に、マッカランの蒸留所はあります 。美しく豊かな自然に抱かれた丘陵地帯で、そばを流れる「スペイ川」は古くから鮭釣りの名所とされ、最高水準の保全指定が適応 されています。
なお当時マッカランを作っていたのは、「ケンプトラスト 」という組織です。マッカランの所有者であったロデリック・ケンプ氏の死後、酒造りにケンプ一家のリーダーシップと精神を注ぎ続けるために設立されました。低品質の大麦を納入した業者にはきっぱりとした物言いで返金を要求した と言われています。
一方政府は、アルコール上流のための大麦在庫を食料供給へ回すため、ウイスキーの生産と販売を規制し始めます。さらにウイスキーの蒸留も、1940年から44年の終わりごろまで法的に禁止してしまいます。基準に見合う高いクオリティを維持して生き残ることを目指 して、ケンプトラストは取り組んでいきます。
蒸留が禁止されるともちろん新しいウイスキーを造ることができなくなり、目先の利益を優先する業者も多くでてきます。 手持ちの在庫を売りに出したり、 熟成度の低い蒸留酒を使ってウイスキーの品質を落としたりする業者もありました。
新生マッカラン蒸留所
北海道より少し小さい面積のスコットランドには、100を超えるウイスキーの蒸留所があります。「ザ・マッカラン蒸留所」は、スコットランド北部、ハイランド地方の東側に位置するスペイサイドに建設 されている、シングルモルトウイスキー（大麦麦芽100%のウイスキー）の蒸留所です。
1824年に創業されてからは、素材の仕入れから製造、販売まで一切の妥協をせずに完璧さを追求した結果、今のブランドが出来上がりました。さらに2018年5月に、新しい蒸留所が建設され、旧蒸留所は閉鎖されています。「ブロッホ」（円塔形の要塞）を彷彿とさせるデザイン となっています。
新蒸留所ができたのは2018年5月ごろ。既存の蒸留所から400メートルほどのマッカラン所有地に作られました。
